An Islamic account is not automatically a protected deposit. An eligible Islamic deposit at a member bank of Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) is protected within the applicable limit; an investment account is excluded from PIDM deposit insurance. Read the product classification and protection statement before looking at an advertised return. PIDM deposit protection · Maybank investment-account PDS.
Aina and Daniel each have RM10,000. Aina wants money available for a known expense. Daniel is examining an account with an indicative return. These fictional Malaysians should first ask whether their placement creates a deposit repayment obligation or investment exposure. Equal amounts can give different rights, loss exposure and protection. Here, PDS means Product Disclosure Sheet.
Start with the legal classification
Section 2 of the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 (IFSA) defines an Islamic deposit by full-repayment terms, or an arrangement whose proceeds are no less than the amount placed, subject to its exclusions. An investment account accepts money for investment without an express or implied obligation to repay it in full. A deposit repayment obligation is distinct from PIDM protection if a member bank fails. IFSA section 2.
Deposit or investment?
Named Malaysian examples checked 6 October 2026. A “-i” suffix does not decide protection.
IFD-i · term deposit
Commodity Murabahah; fixed profit for an agreed term.
PDS states PIDM protection within the system’s applicable limit and aggregation rules.
GIA-i · investment account
Unrestricted mudarabah mandate.
Principal and returns not guaranteed; no PIDM deposit insurance.
Unclear statement? Pause
Ask the bank to show the classification in the PDS and agreement.
Confirm the exact eligible deposit in the bank’s register before placement.
Capital preservation is an investment objective, not a principal guarantee. An indicative return is an expectation or illustration, not a promise. A profit-sharing ratio divides actual profit; it is not a promised percentage gain on capital. GIA-i’s PDS warns of no return and possible partial or entire principal loss on early redemption. Follow the money and the obligation

Aina → deposit
RM10,000 placed with the bank
Bank as Aina’s agent → buys commodities evidenced by her ownership documents. Aina then sells those commodities → bank as buyer (principal), for her deposit amount plus profit, payable later. Those separate roles create her contractual repayment claim.
Principal and contractual profit are paid under the agreed term and withdrawal conditions. Money is not simply held untouched in a box.
Check PIDM across Aina’s other eligible Islamic deposits at the same member bank.
Daniel → investment
RM10,000 supplied as capital
Daniel provides capital; bank manages investment in selected Shariah-compliant assets under an unrestricted mandate.
Profit, if any, is shared at the agreed ratio. Ordinary financial loss is borne by Daniel, subject to the manager-fault exception.
PIDM does not replace investment losses.
Questions to compare
Deposit: when can I withdraw and what profit do I forgo?
Investment: what risks and assets am I exposed to, and can I lose principal?
Both: what fees, operational restrictions and records apply?
Not every Islamic deposit pays contractual profit. PIDM’s 2021 explainer describes qard deposits as repayable money without contractual profit, although a discretionary gift may be given. Tawarruq deposits use commodity transactions that permit contractual profit. The named term-deposit example belongs to the latter family. A familiar contract name alone cannot establish principal or PIDM protection. PIDM Islamic deposits explainer.
How PIDM balances combine
PIDM’s current FAQ states RM250,000 per depositor per member bank, including principal and return. Islamic and conventional deposits receive separate limits. Eligible deposit protection is automatic and free; additional coverage cannot be bought from PIDM. It concerns member-bank failure, not investment performance. PIDM deposit FAQ.

- Ringgit and foreign-currency deposits in the same category at the same bank aggregate after conversion to ringgit; currency creates no second limit.

These rules are supported by PIDM’s current DIS examples and FAQ. Amounts above the insured limit are outside deposit insurance, but not necessarily a final loss: a depositor may seek recovery from the liquidator if the bank is liquidated. Neither recovery nor full repayment of that excess is promised. PIDM deposit protection · PIDM deposit FAQ.

Protection does not settle withdrawal costs
Read tenure, notice, profit forfeiture, fees and renewal. The IFD-i PDS printed 19 June 2026 says no partial withdrawal and summarises early-withdrawal profit by tenure. But the September 2026 deposit terms (G.4.3.2; N.37.5.2) and the premature-withdrawal rule linked from the product page distinguish immediate withdrawal with no profit from 31-day-notice withdrawal paying 50% of profit computed for completed days, for the stated placement/renewal dates. Ask the bank to reconcile the June summary with those terms for your placement. No personalised withdrawal amount is established here. GIA-i’s PDS states no processing fee on opening, with other operational fees on the bank website. Withdrawal conditions vary by customer segment and tenure, including special treatment of a one-month placement. Ask for applicable full terms, profit-sharing ratio, performance report, fees and redemption calculation. Convenient access does not eliminate investment risk. Maybank investment-account PDS.
Muslim and non-Muslim participation
Maybank’s named IFD-i page lists individuals, joint holders, businesses, foreigners and other account types with identification requirements; it does not list a religion restriction. This establishes published categories, not admission for a particular applicant or every investment account. Muslim readers may also seek guidance on personal religious duties; non-Muslim readers still accept contractual terms. Either reader should check classification, principal risk and PIDM status independently of religious preference. Maybank deposit product page.
