Use the history to find the right source
If you want to understand an account, home financing or takaful cover, start with the practical guide for that decision. This history helps when an older publication says “ISRA” and you need to know which institution, period and kind of source it refers to. It is a historical source record, not a provider’s offer.
ISRA stands for International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance. INCEIF’s official research page attributes its establishment in 2008 to Bank Negara Malaysia. Its original Background page describes applied Shariah research, knowledge resources, development of expertise and dialogue among practitioners, scholars, regulators and academics. H1 H4
The name and organisation changed over time
The May 2008 date comes from INCEIF’s milestones. The later consolidation and rebranding should be read as separate developments. The timeline deliberately distinguishes an archive capture from the date an organisational change took effect. H2 H3

Full text explanation
Read from top to bottom: ISRA’s applied-research establishment is dated May 2008; I-FIKR was initiated in 2010; the 20 November 2017 archived Background page records its remit and an existing INCEIF relationship; INCEIF dates consolidation with ISRA and ISRA Consulting to July 2021; the ISRA Institute name took effect on 1 January 2025. The rebranding notice has a 31 December 2024 dateline and a separate 8 January 2025 publication date. The 2017 row is the capture date of a page, not a corporate event.
ISRA’s relationship with INCEIF
In the 20 November 2017 archive capture, ISRA describes itself as part of the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), using its facilities, academic expertise and postgraduate resources. It also says a Council of Scholars was set up to give input to the strategic direction of research. This records an earlier relationship; it does not date a legal merger or identify current officeholders. H1
INCEIF separately dates consolidation with ISRA and ISRA Consulting to July 2021. The rebranding notice explains that after the 2021 consolidation, ISRA was named ISRA Research Management Centre. These sources support that sequence without implying the institutions had no relationship before 2021. H2 H3
Where the official work sits now
The official notice makes the ISRA Institute name effective on 1 January 2025. Its body is dated 31 December 2024; the webpage publication metadata gives 8 January 2025. The current research page describes three Centres of Excellence and an internal Research Management Centre. Use the official INCEIF pages for current institutional information; older labels may remain in menus or archived material. H3 H4
I-FIKR means Islamic Finance Knowledge Repository. INCEIF dates the platform’s initiation to 2010 and describes books, papers, articles, fatwas and learning materials. It is a way to locate knowledge, not a new name for the whole institution. The official page advertises subscription access; this record does not establish a current subscription price or promise free full text. H5
Research institutions and Malaysian regulators
A paper can explain a contract or discuss a Shariah view. That does not make the paper your financing agreement, a current regulatory rule or a product-specific approval. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) describes its Shariah Advisory Council’s authority for Islamic financial business that BNM supervises and regulates. Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) describes its council’s scope for Islamic capital market business or transactions. Check the issuer and scope of the particular ruling you need. H1 H6 H7
Which role are you relying on?
Historical research and knowledge
- ISRA — archived research remit
Applied research, a repository of Shariah views, expertise development and dialogue. Its Council of Scholars provided input to research direction.
H1 - I-FIKR — resource platform
Books, papers and other knowledge materials. A resource’s original author, issuer, date and jurisdiction still matter.
H5
Current official institutional description
- ISRA Institute at INCEIF University
Applied Shariah in economics and finance (CASHiEF), Islamic Social Finance, and Research and Innovation in Islamic Economics (i-RISE): three Centres of Excellence.
H3 · H4 - Research Management Centre within the Institute
Research management, grants, commercialisation, events and publications. The RMC label can still name an internal function after the Institute’s rebranding.
H4
Shariah authority within stated scope
This educational reconstruction
- Newly written source record
Historical explanation and reader routes only. This page establishes no official affiliation, ownership, endorsement or power to issue rulings.
- Publisher identity: launch information missing
The rebuilt site’s legal operator/publisher identity has not been supplied. It must be established before publication.
Full text explanation
Four separate panels compare roles. Archived ISRA conducted research, collected knowledge and supported dialogue; I-FIKR is a resource platform. The current INCEIF research page describes ISRA Institute with three centres and an internal Research Management Centre. BNM’s SAC covers Islamic financial business regulated by BNM, while SC’s SAC covers Islamic capital market business or transactions. This newly written reconstruction provides explanation only and has no established official affiliation or ruling authority. Its legal publisher identity remains missing. There is no arrow from a research paper to product approval.
A Malaysian reading example
Imagine Nur and Daniel comparing financing for a home. This is a fictional reading example. They find a 2017 ISRA paper discussing a contract. They can use it to prepare questions: who owns the asset, who acts as agent, what payments are owed and which events change those obligations? They still need the provider’s current Product Disclosure Sheet and agreement to establish the offered structure, total payment, fees, late-payment terms and exclusions.
Both Muslim and non-Muslim readers can use these historical resources to learn. Religious compliance, eligibility and affordability answer different questions. An institutional name or research title alone establishes none of them for a particular person. No eligibility, cost or benefit is calculated in this history.
Before you rely on an older source
- Identify the original author or issuer and the exact document, not only a familiar logo.
- Separate publication date, the period discussed, effective date and archive capture date.
- Check whether it is research, a resolution, a catalogue entry or actual product terms.
- Follow the original source for its jurisdiction and any later revision. A repository copy does not expand its scope.
- For money decisions, verify ownership, obligations, total cost, exclusions and complaint routes in the current provider documents.
