Islamic Economics: Principles & Analysis

Use this multi-author 2018 textbook to locate questions about household choices, markets and the wider economy through an Islamic economics lens. It is useful background for asking better questions; a contents list alone cannot tell us whether an argument succeeds or a policy improves lives. E1 · E5

Sources checked 6 October 2026

This is an English-language book record with a newly written English/Bahasa Melayu explanation. The BM page is not a Malay edition of the original book or an authorised chapter translation. The original title is retained; catalogue “and” and “&” variants refer to the same recorded work.

Book edition, editors and publication details

Do not turn the 2022 reprint into a “second edition,” or the 2020 upload into a 2020 publication. The public preliminaries identify the three editors separately from authors and reviewers. The IIUM record preserves the full 28-author citation; the editor-uploaded preliminaries preserve contributor roles. A chapter-to-author mapping was not recovered, so no chapter is attributed to a guessed author.

The publisher catalogue corroborates the cover title and broad scope through indexed text. Cover and title-page images were not independently inspected; printed identity is supported by the preliminaries’ transcription and university records. E2 · E5

The publisher’s 2024 catalogue lists “Year published: 2019,” while the preliminaries say first published 2018 and IIUM records 2018. The public evidence does not explain that difference. This record retains 2018 as the attributed first-publication year and separately reports the catalogue’s 2019 label; it does not invent a new edition or a publication day. E1 · E2 · E5

Five parts, with different levels of analysis

The public preface and contents identify 21 chapters in five parts. The visual is a compact paraphrase of that structure, not a reproduction of the full contents or a summary of chapter findings. Microeconomics examines individual and business decisions; macroeconomics examines the economy as a whole. E2

Five reading lenses

Move between the individual, institutions and the wider economy.

Part 1 · ch 1–5

Foundations

Worldview, methods and ethical starting points.

Part 2 · ch 6–10

Microeconomics

Choices of households and firms; markets.

Part 3 · ch 11–16

Macroeconomics

Output, policy and international trade.

Part 4 · ch 17–19

Financial systems

Finance and social-finance institutions.

Part 5 · ch 20–21

Selected challenges

Development and challenges for the discipline.

Reading structure, not a cash-flow model or proof of policy outcomes.

Full text alternativeThe book has 21 chapters: foundations 1–5; microeconomics 6–10; macroeconomics 11–16; financial systems 17–19; selected challenges 20–21. This paraphrased map helps locate topics; it does not state what individual chapters prove.

Use the book to frame a question

New editorial example: Aina and Daniel are comparing household priorities while a small Malaysian business faces higher input costs. A household budget question and a national inflation question need different evidence. The contents map helps them locate a relevant area; it does not provide a personal budget, business forecast or policy verdict.

When reading, separate a proposed principle, a theoretical model and a measured result. For a claim that a policy reduces hardship, ask what data, population, time period and comparison support it. Do not present a chapter heading on social finance as proof that every scheme reaches everyone or that a programme has reduced poverty. These are our reading questions, not findings attributed to the book.

The book’s scope is not evidence of every result

A textbook can help organise concepts without establishing that any current product is suitable, affordable or Shariah-compliant. Reading it does not create ownership, a financing debt, an entitlement to assistance or an investment return. For those questions, use the actual scheme rules and dated contracts.

Muslim and non-Muslim readers can use this explanation to understand the subject. That is separate from the religious obligations discussed in the original work or the eligibility of a particular zakat, waqf or commercial scheme. This page does not infer anyone’s obligations or eligibility.

Identity, structure and findings are different

How far can we go with the sources actually read?

Catalogue / repository

Identity supported

2018 in preliminaries / IIUM; 2019 in publisher catalogue. Editors/authors and binding ISBNs supported.

Public preliminaries

Structure supported

Five parts and 21 chapters; Answers starts at p. 814, so final pagination needs a copy check.

Unseen chapter / current scheme

Further evidence needed

Chapter conclusions, chapter-author mapping, present costs, religious duties and access conditions are not established here.

More metadata does not replace reading an argument or checking a scheme.

Full text alternativeThe preliminaries and IIUM record identify first publication as 2018; the publisher catalogue labels the book 2019 without explaining the difference. Binding-specific ISBNs are supported. Library pagination is 813 plus preliminaries, while public contents list Answers at p. 814. Unseen chapters and current schemes need their own evidence; no findings, obligations or eligibility are inferred.
Evidence map with the pagination discrepancy retained. A catalogue or contents heading is not evidence of a chapter’s results. E1 · E2 · E3 · E4 · E5

Access and costs: metadata is not the full book

The IIUM record marks its published-version PDF as restricted to registered users and provides a request-a-copy route. No request was sent and no restricted file was accessed. The publicly visible editor upload supplies preliminaries; it is not represented here as free access to all chapters. Copyright remains with the publisher.

Search INCEIF KMC or UIS Library by ISBN for a legitimate library route. Confirm membership, visitor access, borrowing terms and charges with the library. Its catalogue is not a guarantee of availability. The publisher’s publications page links the catalogue, store and I-FIKR resources; check edition, binding, price, delivery and any digital licence before buying. No current purchase price or full-text entitlement has been verified.

A checklist for accurate reading and citation

  1. Check the copy’s copyright page and ISBN, rather than a retailer’s page count.
  2. Identify the chapter author before citing a specific argument. The three editors are not interchangeable with every contributor.
  3. Record the chapter title, verified pages, publication year and edition/reprint exactly as the copy states.
  4. Read the argument and evidence before calling a theory an established result.
  5. For a present-day financial decision, check the actual product or scheme documents and relevant current rules.
