ISRA Thematic Workshop 2013 – Shariah Issues in Intangible Assets and Their Application in Islamic Financial Institutions
Kuala Lumpur, November 12, 2013 – The International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) organized a half-day thematic workshop titled, “Shariah Issues in Intangible Assets and Their Application in Islamic Financial Institutions”. The workshop was held at Lanai Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia. The aim of this workshop was to discuss the Shari’ah issues related to intangible assets. This workshop attracted around 70 experts, comprising industry practitioner, academics, Shari’ah scholars and regulators.
The workshop was inaugurated with an opening doa recitation by Bro. Abdul Hakim bin Abdul Rahman followed by welcoming remarks by Dr. Marjan Muhammad, Head of Research Affairs Department of ISRA. The discussion was initiated with a brief presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Said Bouheraoua, the senior researcher from the Islamic Banking Unit at ISRA. Dr. Noor Suhaida Kasri was the moderator of the workshop.
After the presentation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Said, the four discussants, consisting of industry professionals and academics, commented on the paper presented:
- Prof. Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman from Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMUC)
- En Rafe Haneef from HSBC Amanah Berhad
- En. Muhd Ramadhan Fitri Ellias from Maybank Islamic Berhad
- En Burhanuddin Lukman from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
Many constructive comments and feedback were received from the panellists and participants. Among the valuable inputs that were suggested to be include in the paper under discussion were issues pertaining to intangible asset being used as musharakah capital and using air-time in the tawarruq structure. At the end of the workshop, Prof. Dr Ashraf Md Hashim, the CEO of ISRA Consultancy Sdn Bhd (ISCB) gave the closing remarks and thanked all participants, presenters and committee members for making the event a success.
